Writing Advice that Blew my Mind

I have wanted to be a writer for a very long time. Because I wasn’t yet ready to actually write I spent a lot of time reading about how to write. I’ve read almost all of the how-to-write books out there. With my new goal of actually writing a book instead of just thinking about it I’ve been writing more and generally unhappy with what I’m producing. And yesterday a TikTok video from @jrv_perry pointed me to a piece of advice I’ve never seen before, that I feel has kind of changed everything.

The article is is part of a nuts and bolts writing advice series by Chuck Palahniuk, specifically about thought verbs. You should go read it now.

The article goes on to explain the basic concept of show don’t tell in such a specific and useful way that it honestly felt like I had never heard it before. My mind is blown and I actually want to get to writing so I can practice this.

Go read it and tell me what you think.
